YAKSHAGANA – A TIMELESS TRADITION
Yakshagana, the vibrant dance drama of Karnataka, is a centuries-old theatrical tradition performed by traveling troupes (Mela/Mandali) in open-air theatres, often in paddy fields through the night. Today, it has also adapted to indoor stages while preserving its essence.

THE EPIC NARRATIVE – VAALI MOKSHA
This play, drawn from the Aranya Khanda of the Ramayana, was originally composed by the 16th-century Yakshagana playwright Parthi Subba. It depicts the intense conflict between humans and the Vanaras (ape-like beings), culminating in the dramatic downfall of Vaali, the Vanara king. The pivotal alliance between Rama and Sugreeva sets the stage for the later events of the Ramayana.
Traditionally performed as a Taalamaddale (a dialogue-based form), this production expands the theatrical possibilities of Yakshagana through enhanced choreography, rhythm, and music, while retaining its impromptu dialogue, dance, and narrative elements. The play evokes a spectrum of emotions beyond the heroic and humorous, delving into love (Shringara), sorrow (Karuna), wonder (Adbhuta), and tranquility (Shanta).
By blending tradition with innovation, this production makes Yakshagana more accessible to new audiences, transcending language barriers while preserving its spontaneous and dynamic storytelling. This adaptation condenses the grand tale into a powerful performance, ensuring its impact both in India and abroad.
